Banners of the King. The War of the Vendee 1793 by Michael Ross

I had thought I had long lost this book, which I bought back in the late 1970s. Thankfully, during our packing up crusade I found it lurking in a dusty old bookcase in the guest room.

Just as well as the very same book is for sale on Amazon for £97.99!!!!!! I remember it was an excellent read and I look forward to reading it again.

  1. There was an interesting article on this particular conflict in a very early issue of Wargames Illustrated, featuring, I believe, a slew o nicely painted 15mm Battle Honours figures and nicely executed scenery. I need to pull that from the shelf and reread it this weekend I think. On a different note, some of the prices asked by online sellers of old, out-of-print titles are insane. I am thinking of a particular Christopher Duffy title on the Austrian army of the SYW-era. Presumably, they want to sell the books, but unless one is a rare books collector, with a budget to match, well, it's back to the library and searching a database for an interlibrary loan. Sigh.

    1. Stokes, I know what you mean and I'm glad I got the book I think you are referring to when it first came out. Interestingly, over the years I managed to acquire two copies of Duffy's Eagles over the Alps, but I almost couldn't give the spare copy away when it was on eBay! Therefore I still have two copies. I think when Dr Duffy passes from this mortal coil there will be an even greater interest in his works and silly prices! I know the article you mention. Was it not illustrated with Foundry Vendee figures? Or is that another one?
      Cheers,
      Colin

  2. I've had the book for several years I think I got it from Todd Fisher at EHQ though it has not been off the shelf for a good few years. Check out Dave Huntley's Northumbrian Wargamer blog- he has a largish Venfean War collection . I've even playeed a game or two with those forces.
